Title
Portal of St. Anne: Lintels
Caption
The Portal of St. Anne was installed around 1225 but its tympanum, upper lintel and some of the archivolts date from around 1150. Shown here are the left sides of the two lintels. The upper lintel (c. 1150-55) depicts scenes from the Infancy of Christ. From left: Nativity of Christ, the angels' announcement to the shepherds, two bearded men, King Herod, and the Three Magi. The lower lintel (c. 1225) depicts stories pertaining to the marriages of Joachim and Anne (left) and Mary and Joseph (right, seen here). Anne is the Virgin Mary's mother, who is mentioned in early Christian stories but not in the Bible.
