Title
Sarcophagus of Marcia Romania Celsa: Baptism of Cornelius
Caption
Peter baptizes the centurion Cornelius and his sons (Acts 10) in the waters of a miraculous fountain, which he obtained by striking a rock. The latter aspect of the story is not found in the biblical account, but became popular in the Early Christian era because Moses (who struck a rock to obtain water in the desert) was seen as a prefiguration of Peter. Sarcophagus of Marcia Romania Celsa, white marble, c.330-35. Discovered at Trinquetaille in 1974. Inv. 74002/6. Musee de l'Arles Antique, Arles, France.
