Title
Becket Window (c.1320): Saint Thomas Becket
Caption
Detail of a kneeling St. Thomas Becket in the Becket Window, c.1320. This is a rare surviving portrayal of the Archbishop of Canterbury who was murdered in his cathedral by order of the king in 1170. Unfortunately, however, his face is not original. At the Reformation, King Henry VIII ordered all images of Becket to be destroyed - this one was saved by replacing Becket's face with clear glass. Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, England.
