The sacred robe (peplos) of Athena was brought to the Parthenon in procession during the Great Panathenaic Festival, held every four years. The robe was brought through Athens on a ship that moved on wooden rollers. Once on the Acropolis the peplos was dedicated to the ancient wood statue of Athena Polias.
