Bronze Figure of Christ
- Caption

Museum label: "When this fine bronze figure was cast, depictions of Christ tended to concentrate on his invulnerability in death by showing him alive on the cross. From around 1100 a desire to reveal Christ's humanity led to emotionally laden representations of the dying Christ, such as this. The aim was to provoke pity for Christ's sufferings and to demonstrate that he died to cleanse humankind of sin. / About 1100 / Probably Anjou, France / Gilt-bronze / PE 1965.0704.1 / Purchased with the aid of The Art Fund."
