Title
Temple of Janus and Autun Cathedral
Caption
View of Autun and its cathedral through the ruins of the ancient Temple of Janus (1st century). Standing 24m (79 ft) high, the two brick walls that remain are part of the cella, the sacred central area. Around the cella was a gallery, which supported a roof; the holes for the beams can be seen in the ruins. The dedication to Janus is not certain. The Roman temple probably replaced a wooden temple to a Gallic deity that already stood on the site.
